Scoliosis surgery is a surgical method applied to correct the curvature of the spine and make it more smooth. Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is defined as a spinal disorder formed by the curvature of the spine to the right or left in an “S” or “C” shape. While mild cases can be controlled with conservative methods such as physical therapy, corset use and exercise, scoliosis surgery may be considered for curvatures above 40-50 degrees.

The main goal of surgery is to straighten the spine, stop progression and improve the patient’s quality of life. Permanent solutions can be obtained with surgical intervention, especially in curvatures that progress rapidly during adolescence.

Who can undergo scoliosis surgery?

Scoliosis surgery is not applied to every patient. The following criteria are taken into consideration when deciding on surgery:

  • Curvature of 40 degrees or more in the spine
  • Rapid progression of curvature
  • Significant deterioration in physical appearance
  • Severe back and lower back pain
  • Curvatures affecting heart or lung functions
  • Patients who do not respond to corset and physical therapy

In scoliosis, which generally tends to progress in adolescence, surgical intervention can be planned early. However, some adult scoliosis cases may require surgery at an advanced age.

How is scoliosis surgery performed?

Scoliosis surgery is a comprehensive procedure that is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 4 to 6 hours. During surgery, metal rods, screws and hooks are inserted into the curved spine area. This stabilizing system ensures that the spine is positioned correctly and the bones fuse together.

Modern surgical techniques are used to restore the spine as close to its natural curve as possible. Generally, surgery in the back (posterior) region is preferred, but in some cases an anterior access may also be required.

Postoperative Recovery

The recovery period after scoliosis surgery may vary depending on the individual and the extent of the intervention. Patients usually stay in the hospital for 3-5 days after surgery. In the first few weeks, they can return to their daily activities in a controlled manner. The full recovery process is completed between 3 and 6 months.

Things to consider during the healing process:

  • Regular medical check-ups
  • Compliance with physical therapy and exercise programs
  • Avoiding heavy lifting
  • Developing life habits to protect spinal health

Advantages of Scoliosis Surgery

  • Progression of the curvature is stopped
  • Improvement in physical appearance
  • Reduction or complete relief of pain
