Arthroscopic knee surgery is a closed surgical procedure used in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal conditions in the knee joint. In this surgery, a camera (arthroscope) is inserted through small incisions in the kneecap and the intervention is performed with special surgical instruments. The camera allows the surgeon to view the inside of the knee joint in detail on a high-resolution monitor. This method is much less traumatic than open surgery and offers a shorter recovery time and lower risk of complications.
In which cases is arthroscopic knee surgery performed?
Arthroscopic knee surgeries are preferred in the treatment of many different knee problems. The most common conditions are as follows:
- Meniscus tears
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
- Cartilage damage
- Inflammation of the synovial membrane
- Removal of free bodies from the knee
- Patella (knee cap) problems
- Feeling of tightness or sticking in the knee joint
These problems diagnosed at an early stage can be successfully treated with arthroscopic surgery. In addition, this method is an effective option for both diagnosis and treatment in the same session.
What is the surgical process like?
Arthroscopic knee surgery is usually performed under local, spinal or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes 2-3 small incisions in the front of the knee, using one for the camera and the others for surgical instruments. During the procedure, damaged tissues are repaired or removed.
The surgery usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour and patients are usually discharged the same day. With this feature, it both increases patient comfort and shortens the duration of hospitalization.
Postoperative Recovery Process
The recovery process after arthroscopic knee surgery is quite fast. Patients can return to their daily lives within a few days. However, the full recovery time may vary depending on the extent of the procedure. Physical therapy is of great importance for restoring muscle strength and increasing joint range of motion.
- Light walking starts in a few days
- Physical therapy is started from the 1st week
- Return to sports activities is possible within 4-6 weeks (may vary depending on the situation)
Advantages of Arthroscopic Knee Surgery
- It is aesthetically advantageous because it is made with small incisions
- Less pain and bleeding
- Possibility to be discharged in a short time
- Fast healing process
- Lower risk of infection compared to open surgery
