The Success Rate of Gastric Bypass Surgery

In general, the success of gastric bypass surgery is extremely high. With gastric bypass surgery, at least 50% weight loss is achieved and this level is aimed to be maintained for many years. Clinical studies show that many patients lose weight rapidly after gastric bypass surgery and continue to lose weight until 18 to 26 months after the procedure. Patients can lose 40% to 50% of their excess weight in the first six months and 80% one year after the procedure. Another study showed that patients could maintain 50% of excess weight loss 10 to 15 years after gastric bypass surgery.

Diseases That Can Be Treated with Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery helps to eliminate many diseases that typically accompany obesity. Diseases that can be eliminated by gastric bypass surgery are:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Heart diseases
  • Breathing problems
  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome
  • Sleep apnea
  • Backache
  • Degenerative disc and joint problems
  • High cholesterol
  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Shortness of breath and asthma

High blood pressure (hypertension)

About 75% of patients with high blood pressure who take medication to control it can stop taking all medications and have normal blood pressure, usually within six months of gastric bypass surgery.

A large majority of patients with type 2 diabetes receive very stunning results a few weeks after gastric bypass surgery Turkey. These include reducing or completely releasing all medications (including insulin injections). Although existing complications of diabetes cannot be reversed, their progression is likely to be slowed when blood glucose levels are kept within normal ranges.

Heart diseases

Significant improvements in high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol suggest that the risk of dying from heart disease may be reduced in severely obese patients. In a recent study, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was significantly reduced in diabetic patients particularly susceptible to this problem.

Breathing problems

Improvement in breathing ability generally occurs within the first few months after gastric bypass surgery. Often, patients who cannot walk with difficulty find that they can participate in family activities and sports.

Sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome

Because these problems are strongly associated with obesity, dramatic improvement occurs as patients lose weight. Many report a complete resolution of their symptoms within a year of surgery with cessation of snoring and daytime sleepiness. Many patients who require an accessory ventilator to treat sleep apnea no longer need it after surgically induced weight loss.

Because it causes a significant reduction in the size of the stomach and therefore the amount of acid that causes heartburn, gastric bypass surgery may be the surgery of choice for this situation. In almost all patients, all reflux symptoms resolve within a few days to weeks after surgery.

Low back pain and joint disease

Patients often experience significant pain and disability from degenerative arthritis and disc disease and pain in weight-bearing joints (hips and knees).

High cholesterol

The vast majority of patients reach normal cholesterol levels within the first few months after the procedure.

Stress urinary incontinence

The problem of stress, along with weight loss, can be effectively treated.

Shortness of breath and asthma

Gastric bypass surgery is extremely useful because the problem of asthma is largely associated with the problem of gastroesophageal reflux.
