Crowns are dental caps which can be placed over a tooth or a dental implant in order to restore the health, strength, aesthetic appearance and the symmetry of teeth. Unlike veneers, they cover all surfaces of the teeth.
Dental crowns are suitable for the patients who would like to repair their weak or decayed teeth, to treat an already broken tooth, to fix teeth with irregular shapes or cover the dental implants.
The materials used for dental crowns may vary; in Mono Dentistry, our dentists use crowns made of e-max, zirconium, metal infused porcelain, gold, silver and titanium. Each type of crown material has its own advantages and disadvantages; material choice and the treatment plan is created according to the current condition and expectations of the patients.
E-max Crowns is a type of all-ceramic crown with an appealing translucent color combined with extra strength and durability. E-max Crowns are made from a single block of lithium ceramic: it is a highest quality material harvested due to its durability and strength. What makes the operations performed with E-max so special is that it requires minimum tooth shaving comparing other options; therefore, it is considered as revolutionary in dental practices. It is a hard and durable glass ceramic and yet the appearance is quite elegant and natural. It contains no metal on the basis which means there will no gray line around the gum even if the level of gum recedes by time. E-max restorations are used in Smile Design treatments; it enables the patients to design their own smile according to their preferences in terms of tooth shape, smile line or colors.
Zirconium Crowns are made of a white-colored metal basis with porcelain fused to the outside to create a natural appearance. The color of the basis of this material is as white as the surface which means there will be no gray or black part coming to the surface even if your gum recedes. Since the Zirconium Crowns are made of 100% white materials, the tooth is much more transparent. Zirconium Crowns provide patients with a much more aesthetic smile and therefore they are recommended to be used for the teeth in your front smile line. It is a healthy option as it does not contain Zirconium, Amalgam and Nickel, so it will not color your natural teeth or gum line. The fact that it does not contain any Nickel or Amalgam makes the material a very safe and healthy option. It is a good combination of functional and aesthetic results and affordable prices.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns are not recommended for patients looking for a high quality Smile Design unless you have a limited budget. They are made of porcelain over the underlying silver-colored metal material to create a natural look. Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns are more recommended to be used for the sides or back of your mouth where they will not be very visible instead of the front line. If you are on a limited budget Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns can be used on your front teeth too; however, if your gum recedes over time, a black line around your gum will appear when you smile. Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns contain Nickel; therefore, they should be renewed after 6-7 years to prevent the health of your gum against any harm or complications. If you are looking for a healthier and more natural option which does not include Nickel, other options like Zirconium or E-max will be more suitable for you.
Gold crowns does not aim to look natural; usually preferred for unique and stylish look of the teeth. Gold crowns are one the strongest and most durable crown materials; they require minimal tooth shaving beforehand.
Titanium is used in many areas of dentistry due to its durability and strength. Titanium crowns are biocompatible; the silver color of them are usually preferred to achieve a unique smile.
Silver crowns are another option for full metal crowns. It used to be used in the treatment of the back teeth because of its silver color, however today, it is preferred in front teeth too, for a unique smile. It requires minimal tooth shaving beforehand.
