Hair Transplant procedures are very developed and safe as surgical procedures preferred by many patients to cure their hair loss and design an aesthetic hairline today. Although the techniques allow the latest technological developments to be used, hair transplant procedures may cause side effects just like any other surgical procedure.

The possible hair transplant side effects may differ depending on the technique and the skin structure of the individual; side effects can be observed as long term and short term side effects.

Short-term side effects

Bleeding

During and after hair transplant procedures, it is normal to experience bleeding since the procedures involves usage of so many sharp-ended tools or in some techniques, blades. Mild bleeding may keep continuing for some time –usually for 3-4 days- after the procedure is done and it is expected. Although it is very uncommon, if the bleeding does not stop or gets heavy, you should contact your hair transplant specialist immediately.

Swelling

Another common one of the short term hair transplant side effects is swelling and edema on the scalp. They are experienced by almost half of the hair transplant patients in their post-surgical period. The build-up fluid in the scalp leads to swelling after the operation and it is also a normal part of the healing process. Edema disappear short after the operation and does not have a negative effect on the results of the hair transplant procedure.

Itching

Hair transplant procedures are performed by opening micro channels which causes small wound in high amount after the procedure is done. This can cause itching in the post-op process while the wounds are healing. The important thing is to avoid scratching the hair transplant area since it may remove the scabs and effect the healing process. The post-op instructions done with the prescribed medications, lotions and shampoos can help to reduce itching. Itching is one of the short-term hair transplant side effects and will disappear in a few days after the procedure.

Crusting

After the hair transplant procedure, the opened micro channels may hold crusts for some time until they heal completely. These scabs will go away gently in washing sessions so they should not be removed by force.

Infection

Although it is experienced very rarely, infection may occur after a hair transplant procedure and can be treated with antibiotics.

Pain

Hair transplant is a very safe procedure performed under local anesthesia but still it is invasive and surgical therefore it is totally normal to experience some pain after the procedure.

Acne

Small acnes can be seen as one of the hair transplant side effects after the procedure. It is important not to interfere them and wait them to disappear in order not to delay healing process.

Numbness or lack of sensation

Though not so common, patients can experience numbness in their scalp after the hair transplant procedure. This is a short term side effect and will disappear within a few weeks.

Hiccups

Hiccups may be experienced as a rare hair transplant side effect. Hiccups are among short term hair transplant side effects and will go away by itself in around 2-3 days. It may occur during or a little after the procedure because of the stimulation of the diaphragm in very nervous and excited patients.

Long-term side effects

Scalp Laxity

The hair transplant procedures may cause skin laxity especially after FUT technique is applied. This can be a long term or a short term side effect depending on the skin structure of the patient.

Scarring

Scarring is mostly a problem if the hair transplant procedure is done by using FUT technique. FUT technique leaves a linear scar at the back of the scalp since it involves of cutting out a strip of skin from that area. On the other hand, when the hair transplant is done by using FUE technique, the possible scars are only white dots at the donor area which are very hard to see without a close look. Scarring is one of the long term hair transplant side effects, however there are treatments offered to reduce any kind of hair transplant scarring.

Shock loss

Shock loss is neither a long term nor a short term hair transplant side effect although it is often perceived to be; it is a normal phase of hair transplant healing process. A few months after the procedure is done, the transplanted hair may fall out. Although this usually makes the patient think that the operation was not successful, it is actually a normal phase and your newly transplanted hair will grow again after a few months.

How to minimize hair transplant side effects?

In order to experience the discomfort caused by the hair transplant side effects in minimum, the treatment plan should be prepared elaborately, the procedure should be done with the most advanced techniques and tools, pre-op and post-op instructions should be followed carefully.

  • Smoking should be refrained before and after hair transplant; it may reversely affect the healing and scar tissue.
  • Prescribed medication and shampoos should be used properly.
  • Blood thinners should be avoided before and after hair transplant.
  • Sun exposure and sweating should be refrained until the recovery is done.
