A hair transplant is a popular procedure for those who live in a social environment that places a high value on aesthetic appeal, style, and youthfulness. Even the uniqueness of a hair transplant is subject to aesthetic standards in this context. One of the factors allowing the hair transplant procedures to keep up with the rules of modern society is their easy and quick recovery process, which suits individuals with busy schedules.

When you have decided to have a hair transplant operation, it is important to understand that the process does not end with the procedure itself. A significant number of complications and undesired results are caused by an improper approach to the hair transplant recovery process.

Hair transplant procedures have become an important part of modern medicine. However, as with all other surgical cosmetic procedures, a hair transplant requires a delicate and caring approach from both the patient and the hair transplant specialist at every stage. It is of the utmost importance that patients understand the importance of hair transplant recovery in order to ensure the sustainability of the results and their comfort.

The Recovery Processes of FUE and FUT Techniques

The duration of the hair transplant recovery period may vary slightly depending on the chosen hair transplant technique. The FUE hair transplant and FUT hair transplant techniques have different recovery periods in terms of time and aftercare instructions, although they are similar processes with the same target.

It is important to note that in the FUT technique, the strip scar also requires proper care during the recovery process. Since the FUT hair transplant is a more complex and invasive procedure than the FUE hair transplant technique, the recovery time for the FUT can be slightly longer than that of the FUE. The FUE procedure leaves no visible scar, and the discomfort experienced during the hair transplant recovery process is also minimized.

Temporary Side Effects on Recovery Period

There are some short-term side effects that may be experienced during the healing period of a hair transplant procedure. Please be aware that these side effects are temporary and are to be expected. Among these short-term and temporary side effects are:

  • Itching
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Acne

Most of these side effects will disappear within a week. Some of them can be gone even in the first three days.

Shock Loss

The hair transplant recovery timeline includes a period called “shock loss.”. After the hair transplant operation, patients may experience shedding of their newly transplanted hair in 2–4 weeks. This can cause anxiety, with some patients questioning the success of their hair transplant procedure. However, this phase is a normal and expected part of the recovery process. After a few months, the newly transplanted hair will start to grow again.

Shock loss is a natural part of the hair transplant recovery process. While it does not occur in every patient, there is no cause for concern if it does occur. It should be noted that shock loss can be observed in both FUT and FUE procedures.

It is important to note that when considering these side effects, it is essential to approach them in the appropriate manner. Your hair transplant specialist will provide you with instructions for the recovery process. These instructions, along with the special medication and shampoos, are designed to provide comfort and support your healing. An inappropriate approach to managing side effects may have a negative impact on the healing process.

Dos and Don’ts in Your Hair Transplant Recovery

  • There will be scabs on your scalp in the first 7–10 days. These scabs should not be interfered with by the patient. The wounds will heal, and the scabs will fall out naturally within the first 10 days after your hair transplant operation.
  • In the first week of hair transplant recovery, the transplant area should not be hit or rubbed.
  • It is important to use the prescribed medicine, shampoos and lotions correctly to keep the transplanted area moist.
  • It is possible to get back to work and your daily routine the day after your operation. However, while you may feel good enough to resume normal activities, it is important to rest for at least 20 days after the procedure. Avoid excessive exercise during this period.
  • You will be taking medication after the operation. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid consuming alcohol until you have stopped taking your medication in order to avoid any unwanted reactions.
  • Blood thinners like aspirin should be avoided for the first 10 days to prevent excessive bleeding.
  • In the first month of your hair transplant recovery, you should avoid sun exposure. This is because your scalp will be sensitive to outside effects.
  • The transplant area should not be shaved in the first month because this may harm the newly transplanted follicles.
  • New hair should not be colored or bleached for the next 3 months.

Appropriate post-operative care is essential to ensuring optimal results and a smooth recovery process for the patient. Further information about post-operative care will be provided by your hair transplant specialist and your medical consultant after your procedure.

When Do the Final Results Occur After a Hair Transplant?

It is estimated that approximately 8–12 months after the operation, your newly transplanted hair will get into the growth cycle. After this has occurred, it will be just like your own natural hair. Please note that this period may extend up to 18 months for the crown areas.

Tracking the Recovery Process: Take photos

It is important to note that the hair transplant recovery process should be carefully managed. The most effective method for achieving this is to closely monitor your progress through the use of photographic and video documentation.

After your hair transplant procedure, we advise you to take pictures of your scalp from each angle using a mirror, selfie stick or a friend. Repeat this regularly for a certain amount of time. If you observe any unexpected changes or want to confirm the progress of your hair transplant recovery, you can consult with your hair transplant specialist and medical consultant on the basis of these images.
