Knee prosthesis is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the quality of life in individuals with severe joint pain and restricted joint movement due to various traumas. The damaged bone and cartilage tissue in the knee area is removed and prostheses consisting of metal, plastic or polymer are placed. The operation, also known as knee arthroplasty, takes approximately 2 hours and is frequently performed by orthopedic physicians. The aim of knee replacement surgery is to prevent knee pain by cutting the contact between the damaged joint surfaces and to obtain a joint that can walk as much as desired and climb up and down stairs.

How is Knee Replacement Surgery performed?

Knee replacement surgery is a surgical method preferred in cases such as advanced Osteoarthritis (Osteoarthritis), Inflammatory Rheumatism (Rheumatoid Arthritis) or joint deterioration caused by trauma. In knee replacement surgery, the entire articular cartilage or only the damaged surfaces of the articular cartilage are removed and replaced with an artificial prosthesis. The main purpose of the surgery is to increase the patient’s mobility and improve the quality of life. After knee replacement surgery, pain disappears completely in almost all patients and the patient resumes a pain-free and mobile life.

Who is knee replacement surgery suitable for?

The main purpose of knee replacement surgery is to improve living standards. If the patient’s pain does not respond to treatment methods such as physical therapy, intra-articular injections and painkillers, knee replacement surgery can be considered as an option. It is a preferred surgery for individuals who suffer from severe knee pain due to advanced joint wear, have difficulty in performing daily life activities and do not benefit from medication or physical therapy. It can also be preferred in patients who have serious joint damage at a young age.

Patients suitable for Knee Prosthesis Surgery

  • Severe knee pain and stiffness at a level that prevents daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, getting up from a chair,
  • Continuous pain in rest or sleep
  • Severe knee arthritis (osteoarthritis)
  • Inflammatory rheumatism (rheumatoid arthritis)

Knee Replacement Surgery Recovery Process

Knee replacement Turkey is performed under general or spinal anesthesia and takes an average of 1.5 – 2 hours. Postoperative hospital stay varies between 3-5 days. Physical therapy is important in the recovery process. In the first few weeks, patients begin to walk with assistance, and after 6 weeks, most patients are able to walk without support.

What are the Types of Knee Replacement?

During knee replacement surgery, surgeons remove damaged or worn tissues and bones from the knee joint and replace them with appropriate artificial prosthetic parts. These prostheses can be fixed to the bone with special medical adhesives or titanium screws. Physiotherapy in the postoperative period is of great importance for the patient to strengthen the knee muscles and regain normal mobility.

● Total Knee Replacement (TDR)

Total knee replacement is the most common type of knee replacement in which the entire knee joint is replaced with artificial parts. In this method, two main parts are placed on the lower end of the thigh bone and the upper part of the shin bone. Total knee replacements are often preferred especially in advanced joint damage due to their long-lasting structure and durability.

● Semi-Knee Replacement (Partial Knee Replacement)

Semi-knee replacement is a less invasive surgical method that involves replacing only the damaged part of the knee. In this procedure, healthy tissues are preserved and only the damaged cartilage and bone tissues are replaced with the prosthesis. Although they offer the advantages of shorter recovery time and lower surgical risk, semi-knee replacements may have a shorter lifespan than total knee replacements.

Knee Replacement Postoperative Considerations

– Continue the physical therapy program regularly
– Avoid excessive weight
– Avoid movements that put excessive load on the knee
